Our School
Built in the style of a cozy atrium-like setting, Longfellow Elementary School, a California Distinguished School, sits in the heart of Long Beach. Longfellow opened its doors to the community in the year 1921. Currently with an enrollment of about 975 diverse students, it prospers because of the efforts of our entire school community: a talented, committed staff; active, supportive parents; and neighborhood businesses eager to help and to support our school. We are an equity-centered school, where we uplift and center those from historically marginalized communities, and we ensure that everyone gets what they specifically need in order to be successful.
Longfellow School is a shared decision-making site with all stakeholders acting as active participants. We believe that all children can learn when provided with appropriate opportunities. Longfellow has a long-honored tradition of excellence for all students. Every child has the opportunity and challenge to be the best they can be. Our school motto is, “THE LONGFELLOW LIONS ARE THE VERY, VERY BEST!” You will hear this echoed at schoolwide flag ceremonies held once a month and all other school events. We expect Longfellow Lions to excel, and they do. We are proud of our families and community. Longfellow can boast of a number of community business partners, as well as hundreds of VIPS (Volunteers In the Public Schools). At any given time, you will see our valued volunteers working in classrooms helping our children achieve. The Longfellow PTA puts tireless hours into planning events, advocating legislation, and fundraising. PTA has a strong parent education program available to our families.
Longfellow is an outstanding school due to the efforts of children, caregivers, teachers and the community beyond our gates. Longfellow students believe in themselves and we will not settle for anything less than excellence!
